When this happens, any percentage of blame insurance companies place on the injured motorcyclist will be reduced from the amount the insurance company would pay if they did not attribute any fault. For example, Insurance Company X values the collision at $10,000 given the motorcyclist’s injuries, pain and suffering, and lost wages, but Insurance Company X believes the injured party is 20% at fault for the collision. In this case, Insurance Company X would only offer the injured party $8,000 (20% off of the $10,000). As a result, injured motorcyclists may not be able to collect enough money to cover their medical bills or to be compensated for lost income if this occurs without the help of an attorney.
